Beer has been brewed for over 475 years at the site of the brewery, located at the Steinweg, an old and important trade route during the Middle Ages, connecting several cities from Erfurt to Verona. At the begining of the 19th centurie there were still about 22 breweries remaining at the Steinweg, one of the few which remain today is the brewery Spezial which is in many ways exemplefies the breweries of the 16th century. The brewery was probably founded by Linhard Großkopf in 1536.
