Beer has been brewed in the harbour city of Rostock since the the mid 13th century and was even exported beyond the German borders, often to Scandinavia. The brewery was founded on the 28th of march in 1878 by Friedrich Ohlerich and Georg Mahn who named their brewery Mahn & Ohlerich which became one of the leading breweris in the region.
The brewery was shut down in 1945 after the second World War, the equipment being handed over to the Sovjet Union. Durig the GDR tbe brewery was reastablished under the name VEB Rostocker Brauerei and soon reached their pre-war amount of production. Following the German reunification, the brewery was finally bought by Oetker-Gruppe in 2006.
The Hanseatische Brauerei Rostock is amongst the leading breweries in the region befindet sich neben der Lübzer Brauerei unter den führenden Brauereien in the federal state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
